Leica Vario-Elmar-R 75-200mm f/4.5 3-Cam Telephoto Zoom Lens - Preowned

Overview:

The Leica Vario-Elmar-R 75-200mm f/4.5is a versatile manual-focus telephoto zoom designed for the Leicaflex and Leica R SLR systems. Produced between 1978 and 1984, this lens was developed during the Leitz-Minolta partnership and is frequently cited as one of the best "bargain" lenses for those looking to experience Leica optics without the premium price of modern APO zooms.

• Optics and Performance: Featuring a 15-element design in 11 groups, the lens provides a constant f/4.5 maximum aperture, ensuring consistent exposure across its 2.6x zoom range. While it is praised by some reviewers on eBay for producing excellent images and classic "Leica-like" color rendering, others on the L-Camera Forum note it can show softness at the edges or color fringing compared to later Leica designs.
• Handling and Build: The lens utilizes a convenient "one-touch" design where a single ring controls both zooming (push-pull) and focusing, facilitating swift operation. Its robust black anodized aluminum body is built to Leica's high standards, making it a durable choice for nature and portrait photography.

Key Features:

• Close Focusing: Features a minimum focus distance of 1.2 meters (3.94 ft), which can be further enhanced for scientific or macro work using "ELPRO" auxiliary lenses.
• Mount Compatibility: Most copies found are the 3-Cam variant, ensuring full compatibility with advanced metering and exposure modes on later Leica R cameras.
• Filter Size: Standard 55mm (E55) filter thread.

The Leica Vario-Elmar-R 75-200mm f/4.5

remains a reliable choice for film enthusiasts and digital shooters using adapters who value a classic look and robust German-engineered mechanics.
